Spectator Sport : Swimming Pool

SPLASH! SPLASH! SPLASH! The tangible smell of chlorine filled my nostrils, my ears detected the sound of divers diving and water splashing. Oh, how it satiated my desire to be close to water, bringing back memories from what seems like a million years ago. My eyes started to adjust to the amazingly bright water of the pool, my feet trodded on the gravelly, pebbled tiles leading to the musty-smelling locker room, where I changed to my new, flamboyant swimming trunks in which I glided meters after meters in the water. I showered under the lukewarm water in the renovated stall. Then I tread carefully to the pool itself, unabashed by onlookers staring at my flashy trunks, and watching out for wet spots and cracked tiles.

Energetic kids were splashing around, healthy teenagers were doing laps, pushing themselves, striving to beat the others, red-cheeked and puffing with every stroke they took. Languid adults were chillaxing on sunbeds, fanning themselves and slathering sunscreen all over themselves, indulging in overpriced juices, and reading articles on their iPads in waterproof cases. I swivel my head slightly to the left and was met by the sight of divers gracefully diving and somersaulting from the diving board, a dizzying height from the ground. Tuning out the other eye-catching marvels of the swimming pool, I proceeded to breathing exercises, synchronising my thoughts with my heartbeat, and started stretching, conditioning myself for the continuous and strenuous exertion required when swimming. The effects of my warming up was instantaneous. Totally in control of my body, I stretch one last time, breathe in the tangible, chlorine-scented air, I went to the poolside. What I didn't feel was another person's presence, bumping into me, causing me to fall headlong into the pool.

So much for the "being in total control of my body". And that was when chose gravity showed its hand, precaciously swaying on the side, and the inevitable happened. I fell headfirst into the pool.

  1. Hi Chayanat ! I never knew you loved swimming ! Well This made me remember of the time I went to this "near freezing" water of the pool too. Really nice words you use to describe the pool; chrolide water. Also the kids; energetic and vibrant. Also many more! But one thing is that I think you over use the onomatopoeia SPLASH! First few lines are good, but more and more made the excitement level drop. Other than that, it's good as ever ! :D Keep it up!

    1. Thank you! I don't like swimming, but I love the way you feel when your lung burns and you need to gasp for air during swimming. That is what I like about swimming.

  2. Love how you described the people at the pool. The words you used to describe the places and people there were so clear that I can see and feel the place in my head. I wonder how did that person bumped into you. Great writing! I don't think there's anything to fix in here.

    1. That vivid, huh? Comments like these motivate me to write better pieces. That person probably wanted to bully me or something, because my trunks were too flamboyant. Hahaha, thank you!

  3. Good Lords !! this is good, a million times better than I'd expected, good choice of words, easy to understand, and pictured. Images are vivid, and I can even feel myself there and "feet trodded on the gravelly, pebbled tiles leading to the musty-smelling locker room" !! hehehe, professional, and professional !!

    1. Good Lords indeed! I guess your expectations of me were so low, that this normal piece of writing became a million times better than what you'd expect? Hahahaha joking. Images are vivid because you go to the pool frequently and show off your body, I guess. HAHAHAHA. Thank you, though!

  4. This is a very good spectator sport! The words were descriptive and I could feel myself there at the pool. I liked the ending very much, too. But I don't really know how you could synchronize your thoughts with your heartbeat. Is it like thinking of something differently every heartbeat?

    1. Synchronize yourself to yourself. I guess it is pretty confusing. Maybe if I reword it, like say, to sense all your five sense, and use them to help you become one with soul and body. Food for thought! Thank you tho!

  5. Absolutely intriguing. Baffled me a while after I read your blog entry. I could smell the sunlight and chlorine out of this. It's just so good. The first sentence was already captivating and the entire blog entry just keeps me reading on, and on. Keep up the good work, Chayanat!
